Homemade Healthy Salad Dressings

Salads are amazing and can be a go-to choice for many people trying to eat healthy. However at some restaurants the salads can be one of the unhealthiest choices on the menu because of the volcano of thick dressing poured over the top. I love to get down on some delicious cesar salad sometimes too, but I want to show how the lighter options can be tasty as well.

When you order in a restaurant you don't know what they are putting in their dressing, and when you read many of the labels in the grocery stores you will see lots of hidden calories, sugar and preservative chemicals. Time for a refresh so we can get back to enjoying our salads and KNOW that it is truly healthy fuel for our bodies.

Here are some good STAPLES to always have on hand. Just whisk together the listed ingredients and enjoy!  (none of these have dairy, so they will keep longer)

BALSAMIC

  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (can use more if you like garlic)
  • 1 shallot, minced

 

WHITE BALSAMIC

  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar
  • 2 TB honey (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

 

VINAIGRETTE

  • 2 TB dijon Mustard
  • 4 TB balsamic vinegar, or more to taste
  • 6 TB extra virgin olive oil
  • juice of half lemon, or more to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste

 

GARLIC DRESSING

  • 3/4 cup olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1 clove pressed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

 

Here are some more dressings to mix things up a bit:

TAHINI VINAIGRETTE:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (my favorite brand is: Braggs)
  • 2 TB honey
  • 2 TB Tahini paste
  • 1-2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

 

SOY GINGER:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 TB peeled and crushed fresh ginger

 

FIESTA:

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

 

Time to mix up a big, healthy salad and test out a new homemade dressing!
