Cravings are just part of life.... from chocolate to pickles and everything in between. I deal with my fair share of them, and I've learned usually the biggest challenge is deciphering if it's my mental, emotional, or physical body that is the driving force behind it. Learning to tune into the causes and the effects can greatly affect our ability to deal with them in a healthy and intentional way.
Cravings can be our body's way of communicating to us what it is deprived in and needs more in order to function optimally. However "false" cravings are when our mind or emotions tell us we "need" to have the fries, chocolate cake, or vat of ice cream in order to satisfy ourselves. The latter is usually a result of fatigue, stress or unawareness. By starting to tune in we can learn to decipher what our body truly needs.
For example, if you are craving a piece of chocolate your body likely needs more magnesium, which you can get from other sources, like nuts and seeds. I realize it won't taste like chocolate, but over time the more you give your body the true source of the craving... in this case magnesium by eating nuts, you can slowly detach from the mental or emotional cravings of having chocolate. Below is a great chart to depict many of the common cravings, and what you can eat instead to satisfy what your body needs.
The key here is simply awareness. Try out some of these craving swaps for yourself and see if they work for you. The ultimate goal is long term health and wellness... having dessert cravings and acting on them every now and then is not going to derail you from a healthy lifestyle, but it will certainly benefit you to strive to not make it a daily habit. Take baby steps and see what happens!
